Rock Climbing

Our branch had a great idea for a fundraiser. A service auction. Members donated a service (like sewing alterations, piano lessons, a piece of art, etc.) and people bid on what they wanted. A good family we are friends bought a rock climbing session from another family we are friends with and we were invited by both to join in going to the rock wall to climb. Sweet! Except I have only been once, at the Fun Zone...in Alabama...and I could not get very high at all! I could not hold on for the life of me. So I was very apprehensive.

We got there pretty early. There is a public wall and we got set up and were learning about the equipment. Hunny put up one of the ropes about halfway up when a 'worker' came up and told us it had to be at the very top... And how do you expect us to get it up there??? Yup, someone has to climb to the top to even set up the rope. Welcome to Korea, the land of the not quite right... So, we get our ropes up but then are told that we can't have both up? Something about being too close? But then around 10-11am people start showing up and fill up the wall... including where we originally had our second rope. But no hard feelings...

The kids LOVED it. The oldest flower was able to make it to the top just about every time. The youngest J (only 5 or so) climbed up lickety split! Granted he didn't make it to the top, but probably because he wore himself out. There were people from other groups that watched in awe. On his last climb they were even cheering him on. There were also older ladies there climbing. I think it is great to see people of all ages participating in a sport/activity. You are never too old or too young. You tell yourself what you are capable of, and you do it. You are the only one that tells yourself "No". Don't be afraid to try something new. Don't be afraid of failure. That is how you learn. If everything is easy then why bother? You don't grow or progress.

I had to learn that too. I did not want to climb. There were a ton of people and I knew I wasn't going to be any good. But thankfully my wonderful Hunny encouraged me to go. Eventually I did. I didn't make it to the top but I made it pretty darn high. And ya know what? It was SO fun. I wish I had done it earlier so that I could have gone again. I loved it so much I told

Hunny we had to go again the next weekend. We just bought some gear but we will be borrowing our friends gear until ours comes in. I think it is my favorite activity we have done yet. If anyone wants to go, whether you are here in Korea or elsewhere, I highly recommend trying it. And if you are here, I would love to go with you!

  1. I once went rock climbing and got all the way to the top. It was so cool! I later discovered that my belayer had pretty much hauled me up the wall. When I went rock climbing with a different belayer I didn't get even half way up. :)
