WICKED!

I've heard of this show from many different people. Mostly my seminary teacher that would quote it and sing a few lines from it often. I got the book a long time ago but didn't try reading it until a few years ago and could only make it halfway through because it was so dry. And the beginning was more vulgar then I would have liked so I was skeptical of the play. I had heard the musical was very different then the book and if my seminary teacher raved about it, it must have been good. SO, the show was coming to Korea and tickets went on sale.  It was an Australian production done in English and I begged Hunny to get some and after begging and groveling and convincing he finally bought them ;p It really didn't take much sense he really wanted to see it too.

The night of the show came and we got all fancy, him in his button up and tie and me in my skirt and heels. We headed out and looked around for food with no avail (nothing we had time for anyway) and hurried back to the theater to take our seats. It was neat to see several people from church there. Most of them, like Devon, didn't really know what it was about, just that it was the story of the witches of Oz. The show started and when a monkey actor came swinging out on a rope I knew it was going to be awesome! We were not disappointed. If fact, we were very impressed. The singers were talented, the costumes were stunning, the acting flawless, and the whole show was very entertaining. The plot was intriguing and thought provoking, the whole play was very moving. I was overwhelmed and teared up from the beauty of it all. I was pleasantly surprised when Hunny told me how much he really enjoying it. During the intermission he stated that we were getting the CD, no questions asked. Of course I didn't argue. I was surprised because the show seemed somewhat feminine and it's a musical. But it turns out he enjoys the theater like me, maybe a bit more the way he was talking. Awesome! So the play was in fact different from the book in that it was not boring at all, full, and quick paced. The plot and relationships were the same but there were a few differences I remembered, but I think it was for the better. The producers did an excellent job. It was so rich, and to take a book that was, in my opinion, such a bore and transform it into something so thrilling is an even bigger accomplishment. We had fabulous time and were very happy we went. Hunny even said that we have to do it again, and next time get closer seats. Needless to say I am pretty thrilled.

  1. Powerful performance! Easily the best production I have ever seen.

  2. Thanks for the great review! I'm going to see it tomorrow night at the Sacramento convention center. Someone else had told me a few days ago that the book is very dirty, but that the musical is great. Good to hear that from someone else.

  3. After my mom and little sister saw it in NYC I got a blow by blow recounting of the play. They had the sound track, of course. I really really really want to see the scene were Elba (Elba, right?) sings Defying Gravity. Just thinking about it gives me goose bumps even though I've never even seen the show!

I didn't know it was in Sac! Lost Boy probably told me about it, but I don't remember. Sigh.

Oh! V sang (or is singing?) Popular for a choir concert or competition this year. (Sheesh, with the amount of time I get to spend with her, you'd think I could remember the details!) You should ask her about it.

P.S. I have the soundtrack, too!
